Unlimited Blade Works

I am the flesh and bone of my own sword.
Steel flows through my body, and fire is what courses through my blood.
I have created over a thousand blades.
Unknown to death.
Nor known to life.
Many times I have withstood enormous pain to create thousands of weapons.
And yet, those hands that have braved so much will never hold anything.
So as I pray now, I call forth "Unlimited Blade Works."

Forevermore

I was once flying to the vast skies
When I met someone in the same flight
He had the same virtue when he flies
My life was enlightened by his light

Like two leaves drifting on the calm Wind
We danced and sang: there's no tomorrow
We enjoyed life without being sinned
Wonder why life had to cast the Shadow

My life was best until it happened
A knife stroke me unlike any other
My comrade left me unattended
He traitored me: left in my slumber

With a wounded heart, I was alone
I spread my wings, but I just can't fly
I was left dying on a damned zone
Dosed in despair, why can't I just die?

My story's to end when suddenly
Someone appeared from the dreary night
I was awake: I tended to see
It was Zephyr; my savior, my knight

She molded my soul to live alone
With her by my side, I'll need none more
"Fly exclusively; be no one's clone"
I am the Lone Eagle - forevermore

Book 2:

Tempest

Aptitude

Zephyr – quite an unusual name for a usual human. That was because she was not human at all. As said by John earlier, she was a Familiar. Familiars were entities, most probably in the forms of animals or humans that serve their masters under some conditions. When these conditions, often referred to as contracts, are broken even once, the Familiar will abandon its master, and recreating the contract is impossible. It was the law, a divine and absolute rule that oversees all masters and Familiars, and no one ever dared to break it. Breaking it meant disgrace and shame, for you were not obeying the tradition. This law however, although very powerful, governed only a few people – only the magicians were allowed, and perhaps needed, these beings.

Mages often used Familiars for assistance. Some utilized them for ornament. Some controlled them for practical uses, such as for transportation (Vanguard, for example), for carriage, for guarding their homes like watchdogs, and a lot more. Mages used them in various ways, but surely, mages were all the same in exploiting these Familiars for their principal mission – for battle.

Except from Wind Magicians, neophyte mages were snail – like spell casters. Time seemed to torture these amateurs by giving them a very little moment to cast their magic in front of a raging beast, or an adept magician, or a brisk bandit.

That’s where Familiars step in. While mages were casting their spells, their familiars will protect them from the savages, as a tree shielding a child from a storm. For an enigmatic reason, Familiars were bound to protect their masters at any cost, even at the cost of their lives! (Even though they’re not human, they were still mortals, so they still tend to die). It’s a tandem – a duo. It was a symphony of Earth and Wind; of the slow and the fast. It was a partnership between two beings of different classes.

To their masters, Familiars were like pets, maids or swords, but to John, Zephyr was quite different. He treated her as the same way he was considering an actual person. Zephyr ate on a table, slept on a bed, and wore women’s clothes. Why? That’s because, unlike any Familiar, this lady saved her master’s life! In fact, Zephyr should be John’s master! She just intended to follow the Master – Familiar relationship. As a token of appreciation, John coldly befriended his Familiar (for he disliked women since the tragedy happened). On the other hand, this special Familiar was very conservative, calm and obedient to her master.

Now let’s take a look at Charles and to his Familiar, Vanguard. Vanguard, as said before, looked like a large, white wolf. Charles already had his Familiar since his childhood as an eight birthday gift. As his name implies, Vanguard was given to his master to protect him at all costs. Charles’ parents already knew that their son will be alone for the rest of his life, so giving him a protector, or perhaps a friend, would be the best they could do. Vanguard was the last memory that Charles had, so taking care of this Familiar was a great honor for him.

Song of Eurus

The East Winds witt'ly blow
Bringing forth the Dawn of Fall
Dry leaves dance in a playful flow
Do you see how they stroll?

The East Wind strikes in a reckless grandeur
Humorous and odd, yet deadly and fierce
With bizarre arrows that none can endure
He'll kill you in a curious pierce

How can you defeat a mischievous mind,
As he's tapped away from moonlight?
Prowling somewhere, he's impossible to find
Suddenly he strikes; end of the fight

Don't oppose Eurus; don't go near
A thing you can't see, you should fear

Song of Notus

The South Winds brightly blow
Bringing forth the Dawn of Summer
They're the hottest winds you'll ever know
Do you feel how the heats shimmer?

The South Wind strikes in a radiant grandeur
As impulse and grace mold her noble dance
With her charm, all's under her lure
She'll kill you in a fatal stance

How can you defeat her deadly position?
When a hit comes in, the same comes out
She can also assault with keen precision
She does her moves without a single doubt

Those who oppose Notus are helpless beings
Let their death be their own doing

Song of Boreas

The North Winds coldly blow,
Bringing forth the Dawn of Winter
The beam of Hope shall never glow
Do you see how roses wither?

The North Wind strikes in a dreary grandeur
He delivers frost and woe to all humanity
He's visible, but yet there's no cure
He'll kill you in dark insanity

How can you defeat Death itself,
As he descends as snow and hale?
It's impossible to break a boreal shelf
When all faith's gone, you're bound to fail

Oppose Boreas and you shall die
In the virgin snow, your remains shall lie

Song of Zephyr

The West Winds gently blow,
bringing forth the Dawn of Spring
They're serene, but never slow
Do you hear how leaves sing?

The West Wind strikes in a silent grandeur
Without knowing it, you're dead and gone
Can't see it anyhow, that's for sure
She'll kill you in stoic fun

How can you defeat someone stealth?
With slashes and pierces just won't work
Immense speed is her own health
In blind eyes is where she lurks

Try not to oppose Zephyr
These could be the last you'll ever hear

Zephyr's Emotion

After successfully slaying Helios, the great Fire Dragon of Solaris, John, with his comrades, went back to the town for a short rest offered to them by the grateful citizens. The townspeople wanted to thank them for bringing back the peace and prosperity in Solaris.

The night was enlightened by the lights and the cheers of all the people in the town. Sophia was about to leave the congregation, because as often, she got a lot of research to do. John was lying on the bed, while Zephyr was sitting on a chair near the window, staring at the glorious celebration outside. Where was Charles? Well, as he always did, he was thinking of something terrible and mischievous, and unluckily, he did. His childish yet adult mind sprouted with an idea.

The serenity inside John and Zephyr's room was shattered by Charles' enthusiastic entrance. He walked straight to John and messed his hair. He said:

"Why are you two so quiet?! You should go celebrate with the people outside! We are heroes, remember? You should display yourselves outside and be proud."

"I'm tired, can't you see? I want to rest, and what's the messing hair for?" John complained.

"Nothing. How about you, Zephyr?"

"The wind in its purest form is perfectly invisible. I am not meant to be recognized," Zephyr replied.

"Argh. This only means one thing. I guess I'll have to go alone."

And then he left with his right hand clenched, as he was holding something. After closing the door, the Master and the Familiar were back to their quiet selves. An hour had passed; John was now sleeping while Zephyr was still watching outside. A knock on the door caught her attention, and she opened it. It was Charles, carrying a tray with three glasses of water on it. He placed the tray on the table and said:

"Maybe you're thirsty. I brought you something to drink."

Charles handed out a glass of water to Zephyr. She sipped from it, and having a quarter of the drink consumed, she grew dizzy and hot. She wavered and the glass she was holding fell and was broken. The noise awakened John, and he alertly recognized the situation. Zephyr fell into the bed. John got up.

“What happened to her? What have you done to her?!”

“Don’t worry John. I just gave her something.”

John remembered something. A flashback made his eyes shrieked.

“Isn’t it...”

Charles interrupted: “You’re right, John. It is a Love Potion.”

“How dare you poison her?! How did you do it?”

Charles gave a strand of John’s hair (the one he was holding an hour earlier) to Sophia before she left, and without asking any questions (maybe she already knew it), she made a Love Potion.
“I don’t think it’s effective. The symptoms of a Love Potion’s not like that,” Charles observed.

“You’re such a crap, Charles,” John said.

“Okay, okay! I’m sorry. You’ve been so cold since the tragedy happened, so I thought that making Zephyr fall in love with you will return you to your normal self. John, observe her until she awakens while I will search for an antidote. Is that okay?”

“Fine, just hurry.”

Charles left, and John sat on the bed beside Zephyr. Her fever was gone, and she was now soundly sleeping. After a few moments, Zephyr finally woke up. With sleepy eyes, she wandered her look around, as though she had amnesia. When her pine – green eyes caught John’s, she surprisingly and unusually avoided them. She blushed.

“No... It can’t be. It worked!” He silently screamed.

“Ahh... John?”

“Y – Yes?”

“Can I ask you a favor?”

“S – Sure!”

“Can we take a walk outside? It’s somewhat hot in here.”

“Of course! You can leave the room anytime!” John thought he was saved.

“No. I mean, we, together,” Zephyr specified. Her romantic eyes were still shy.

John trembled.

His body was frozen when he heard Zephyr spoke those words. For five years he never heard Zephyr speak emotionally like that, still he can’t deny it.

“Y – Yes we can!”

“Thank you, John,” she smiled.

John never had this kind of fear. They went out of the inn. Zephyr was wearing a fine women’s dress. Charles gave it to her recently. Street lights were glowing bright like fireflies, and the people around recognized this couple not as heroes but as perfect lovers. Because of having a long, brown hair and passionate, green eyes, Zephyr was quite attractive and unique to the masses. John was embarrassed, but Zephyr never minded them. In fact, she even locked John’s arm into hers and rested her head into his shoulder! John’s embarrassment gradually turned into irritation and anger. It was finally settled when Zephyr asked:

“John, do you love me?”

Knowing that it was only an effect of a mere potion, John finally and recklessly blew out his words:

“Zephyr, I finally had enough of you. Would you please stop embarrassing me? Let’s just go back and wait for Charles to cure you, okay?”

Zephyr felt ashamed.

“I - I’m sorry, John. I just like to...”

Tears began to flow from her eyes, and she ran away fast. John, being surprised, tried to chase her, but he failed. Her speed was unmatchable.

After running away without looking anywhere, Zephyr finally found herself in the middle of a grassy plain. It was where they fought Helios! The remains of the great dragon still lay on the field. She saw a Wind Mage and his Familiar near the corpse. His Familiar was a large green eagle. He was a Rogue – Mage – a magician that was hunted by the law. They were murderers, thieves, and looters (this Mage's a looter). The Wind Mage saw Zephyr, and without saying a word, the large Familiar began to strike silently from the night skies. Zephyr cast her spell:

“Ventus Imperium!”

The west winds blew hard, giving Zephyr increased agility and speed. Vast wings sprouted from her back, and then she summoned her sword:

“Whistle, Vernus Ensis!”

She drew her sword from the spell mark in front of her palm, as though it had an invisible hilt. She began to initiate her counter attack. She flew to the skies to counter – strike the enemy. The talons of the eagle clashed with the Vernus Ensis, but the force of the eagle prevailed. Zephyr bounced back. When she looked back, the eagle withdrew, but a set of floating swords, forged from the winds, stroke her from the caster on the floor. She gracefully dodged most of them, but some slightly wounded her, bringing her down into the floor. The enemy didn’t give her enough time to be reconditioned as he cast the spell again. He cried:

“Ventus Percussum!”

The spell was very fast, that the flying swords were already in front of Zephyr when she got up. She didn’t have enough time to evade the attack! But in a split second, John suddenly flashed in front of her and created a wind barrier that stopped the entire assault. John turned back to Zephyr:

“Are you alright?”

“John, behind you!”

Another set came in. John’s mind was quick. He can no longer cast a spell, but he could dodge it easily, but Zephyr’s behind him! If he did that, she would surely die! So he didn’t; he embraced the blow. Blood dropped from him, which made Zephyr scared.

“John! I – I’m sorry! P –Please don’t leave me!”

“Don’t’ worry, Zephyr. It’s just a scratch. I should have thought that you are behaving like that only because of the potion. I know it’s against your will. I’m sorry.”

“It’s not true, John...”

After looking worriedly at John, Zephyr took a hateful glare at the enemy, who was then casting another spell. For the first time Zephyr’s eyes grew fierce and serious. The opponent’s strike was ceased, for he was casting a greater one: a Transfusion. A Transfusion combines the Master to his Familiar – body, mind and soul, giving them greater power. The Wind Mage took his Familiar’s form, but maintained his intellectual mind. The combination was yet incomplete, but after a few moments, it’s done. Zephyr spoke seriously:

“John, the enemy has grown more powerful. Please let me use it!”

“No, Zephyr! We can only use that twice, and it’s very dangerous, especially for you! I have lost someone special once, and I won’t allow you to make it twice!”

“John, I am your Familiar. I am bound to protect you at all costs. I want to protect you not as a Familiar but as a friend, as a lover. I want, and I will die for you!”

John finally realized Zephyr’s feelings, and so he nodded. Zephyr summoned her sword again while John straightened. He said the magic words:

“The chorus of the Winds heralds the arrival of its master’s final strike.”

A glowing, vertical spell circle, swarmed with mysterious writings, flashed between Zephyr and the enemy. Her wings spread wide, and she dashed through the circle. As she passed through it, John cried:

“Ventus... Finalis!”

Zephyr’s speed was suddenly increased thousandfold. She disappeared with the singing wind, and before a blink of an eye, she flashed below the great eagle. The enemy failed to react in time because of the immense velocity. She tossed the huge enemy using the bottom of her sword, and she cut it in its fall into halves in a silent grandeur. The beast fell into the grass, and Zephyr was victorious. She looked back at John, and made her final smile. She fainted. John ran towards her, but unfortunately his wounded body finally gave up. All he saw was a man riding on a horse from a short distance. It was Charles. John also fainted afterwards.

After opening his eyes, John found himself lying on the bed in the inn. On his side was Zephyr, again in her sleep. On his other side was Charles, sitting on the chair. Charles quietly uttered:

“Don’t worry John, both of you are now fine. And by the way, I already gave Zephyr the antidote.”

“Oh... Really...” John somewhat sadly replied.

“The antidote’s quite expensive. I’ve paid for it, so you’re not angry with me anymore?”

John didn’t answer; instead he looked at the antidote on the table. It’s not just a Love Potion antidote; it’s an antidote for all sicknesses. A Love Potion antidote was much cheaper, so buying a more expensive cure only mean one thing: Charles didn’t use a Love Potion. He didn’t use John’s strand of hair after all, but yet the unknown potion was effective. Charles lied.

Zephyr was right.

Quotes (Part 1)

A wailing, rushing sound, which shook the walls an though a giant's hand were on them; then a hoarse roar, as if the sea had risen; then such a whirl and tumult, that the air seemed mad; and then, with a lengthened howl, the waves of wind swept on.

Ode to the West Wind

O WILD West Wind, thou breath of Autumn's being—
Thou from whose unseen presence the leaves dead
Are driven, like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing,
Yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red,
Pestilence-stricken multitudes!—O thou
Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed
The wingèd seeds, where they lie cold and low,
Each like a corpse within its grave, until
Thine azure sister of the Spring shall blow
Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth, and fill
(Driving sweet buds like flocks to feed in air)
With living hues and odours plain and hill—
Wild Spirit, which art moving everywhere—
Destroyer and Preserver—hear, O hear!

Thou on whose stream, 'mid the steep sky's commotion,
Loose clouds like earth's decaying leaves are shed,
Shook from the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean,
Angels of rain and lightning! they are spread
On the blue surface of thine airy surge,
Like the bright hair uplifted from the head
Of some fierce Mænad, ev'n from the dim verge
Of the horizon to the zenith's height—
The locks of the approaching storm. Thou dirge
Of the dying year, to which this closing night
Will be the dome of a vast sepulchre,
Vaulted with all thy congregated might
Of vapours, from whose solid atmosphere
Black rain, and fire, and hail will burst:—O hear!

Thou who didst waken from his summer-dreams
The blue Mediterranean, where he lay,
Lull'd by the coil of his crystalline streams,
Beside a pumice isle in Baiæ's bay,
And saw in sleep old palaces and towers
Quivering within the wave's intenser day,
All overgrown with azure moss, and flowers
So sweet, the sense faints picturing them! Thou
For whose path the Atlantic's level powers
Cleave themselves into chasms, while far below
The sea-blooms and the oozy woods which wear
The sapless foliage of the ocean, know
Thy voice, and suddenly grow gray with fear
And tremble and despoil themselves:—O hear!

If I were a dead leaf thou mightest bear;
If I were a swift cloud to fly with thee;
A wave to pant beneath thy power, and share
The impulse of thy strength, only less free
Than thou, O uncontrollable!—if even
I were as in my boyhood, and could be
The comrade of thy wanderings over heaven,
As then, when to outstrip thy skiey speed
Scarce seem'd a vision,—I would ne'er have striven
As thus with thee in prayer in my sore need.
O lift me as a wave, a leaf, a cloud!
I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed!
A heavy weight of hours has chain'd and bow'd
One too like thee—tameless, and swift, and proud.

Make me thy lyre, ev'n as the forest is:
What if my leaves are falling like its own!
The tumult of thy mighty harmonies
Will take from both a deep autumnal tone,
Sweet though in sadness. Be thou, Spirit fierce,
My spirit! be thou me, impetuous one!
Drive my dead thoughts over the universe,
Like wither'd leaves, to quicken a new birth;
And, by the incantation of this verse,
Scatter, as from an unextinguish'd hearth
Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind!
Be through my lips to unawaken'd earth
The trumpet of a prophecy! O Wind,
If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?

Confusion

In a dark corner of a stronghold lain an entity - a person, alone in the midst of the night. In front of him was a door - gate made of formidable steel, and it was closed. Silence overshadowed the domains until it was scattered by a feeble sound. The beep came from a small, flat box, beaming with a light of enigma. The mystical door was then opened, as if it was sliced into halves.

On the other side, there was a mysterious man. His identity was concealed by the dreary Dark, and he spoke in a deep voice. The statement was silent, yet was spoken, and the listener heard it. The word moved him, and led him through the door. Passing through it, he suddenly shivered. He felt the grave clinging of inner machinery. He was in a room, quite small and was very cold. The sounds verified that the room was a contraption, a grotesque yet astounding symphony of gears and ropes. The unknown man spoke again, and this time, it sounded. He uttered:

"Bababa ba?"

The question put this youth into a total chaos, registering confusion, despair, and hatred into his mind. A drop of sweat began to flow from his hair to his pallid cheeks. His eyes drifted, hoping that he could gaze a moment of salvation from this living Underworld. He thought the light had already damned him.

He thought wrong.

In a corner of the room, he saw this light coming from a tetragonal figure. The luminous radiance shone upon him, whispering to him the words of wisdom and safety. With a confident heart and soul, he finally replied:

"Bababa."
